SOPHI welcomes Barbara Caine as new Head of School

The School of Philosophical and Historical Inquiry welcomes its new Head of School, Professor Barbara Caine, who took up the post last week (24 January 2011).

Barbara (FAHA, FRHS, FASSA) comes to us from Monash University, where she was the Professor of History and ARC Professorial Fellow from 1995 to 2010.

Most of my earlier research and teaching centered on questions of gender and of sexuality within a late modern European framework. But I have now turned rather to look at questions about autobiography and biography and more broadly about the many different ways to approach questions about the individual life within history.

Barbara was awarded an ARC Professorial Fellowship in 2007 for a large project entitled ‘History and the individual life’, and comes as no stranger to the University of Sydney, having been the first Director of the University of Sydney’s Centre for Women’s Studies.

We are delighted to welcome Barbara to SOPHI.

If you’d like to get to know something of Barbara’s research, an interview with her was recently re-broadcast as part of the Radio National Summer Season. You can download the podcast or listen online by going to the History of Friendship broadcast on Life Matters website.

Barbara will be located in Room 610, Brennan Macallum Building A18 (entry via Room 608)
Quadrangle
