Research Forums to be held in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane
The Department of Gender and Cultural Studies will be hosting one of a series of Research forums on Elite Schools and Globalisation:

It is widely known that elite schools usually function as the gold standard for school education, and that their alumni are often highly influential in economic, political, social and cultural circles. But little is known about how they are responding to the pressures of globalization and whether globalization is altering their educational and social purposes. These forums will explore these issues while at the same time engaging in pertinent conceptual and methodological debates.
Researchers, including research students, from across the social sciences and humanities are welcome. So too are members from the wider educational community. Attendance, including refreshments and lunch, is free of charge. However, to allow full discussion, each forum is limited to 40 places.
Those attending will
- hear some preliminary findings from an international research team about how elite schools in diverse locations, word-wide, are altering as a result of globalization
- discuss such schools’ changing educational and social purposes
- debate methodological issues associated with global ethnographies and global class analysis.

These forums stem directly from a current ARC Discovery project called Elite independent schools in globalising circumstances: a multi-sited global ethnography (2010-2014). This project involves schools in Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, India, Barbados, South Africa, Argentina, Cyprus and England. The project is exploring whether and how elite schools are changing as a result of globalisation. It is examining such things as
- the impact of increased global flows of students, parents and alumni on such schools
- if and how the schools are altering their curriculum in relation to global labour markets
- how the students are imagining their place and purpose in the global world and how the school is helping to shape their imagination
- if and how future global as well as national leaders are being prepared
- the links the schools are developing with like-minded schools and universities around the world
- how the schools unify tradition and innovation
There will be two sets of speakers. The ARC research team and invited specialists. The latter will be announced in due course.
Most sessions will involve panels consisting of selected ARC team members and invited specialists. Each will also involve audience discussion.
